The Patel lab is interested in mechanisms contributing to the hyperexcitability of neurons that mediate Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE). TLE is a chronic neurological illness characterized by persistent seizures that originate in the temporal lobe of the brain. TLE accounts for approximately 60% of all patients with epilepsy and unfortunately 30% of TLE cases are unresponsive to treatment. My research aims to dissect the neural circuity behind TLE. Using Gq and Gi DREADD technology I plan to excite and inhibit TLE circuit hot spots in order to better understand the dysfunctional circuitry of this intractable disease.
